남태평양에 있는 작은 섬나라 투발루입니다. 섬 전체가 푸른빛을 머금고 있는 아름다운 이곳, 그러나 국토의 면적이 점점 줄어드는 위기를 겪고 있습니다. 지구 온난화로 해수면이 매년 4mm씩 높아지면서 이미 2개의 산호섬은 바닷물에 잠겼습니다. [터사/투발루 선장 : "(30년 전에는) 이 섬에서 나무를 봤어요. 그런데 지금은 썰물 때는 바위만 좀 볼 수 있고, 밀물 때는 아예 볼 수 없습니다."] 당장 주민들의 먹거리에도 비상이 걸렸습니다. 채소와 과일을 심을 땅이 없고, 남아 있는 곳은 토질이 변해 작물을 제대로 키워내지 못합니다. 다른 나라에서 흙과 비료를 공급받아 재배한 신선한 채소를 구하기 위해 주민들이 새벽부터 줄을 서야 하는 이유입니다. [셀레타 따우보/투발루 주민 : "우리의 문제는 식물을 심을 공간이 없다는 것입니다. (농사에 적합한) 흙도 얻기가 매우 어렵습니다."] 무릎까지 차오른 바닷물 속에서 기후 위기를 막아달라 호소했던 투발루는 영토가 사라지는 최악의 경우, 디지털 공간에서 국가를 이어가겠다는 구상까지 내놨습니다. [사이먼 코페/투발루 외교장관 : "과학자들은 앞으로 50년에서 100년 안에 우리 나라가 완전히 물에 잠길 것으로 예측하고 있습니다."] 우리 정부는 29일 처음으로 열리는 한국-태평양도서국 정상회의에서 이 문제를 논의할 예정입니다. 특히 이번 정상회의를 계기로 맞춤형 협력 사업을 적극 추진하는 등 기후 위기로 고통받는 태평양 도서국을 돕기 위한 정책을 구체화할 예정입니다.

오페라의 첫 장면에 배를 타고 부탈소로에 들어오는 텔로스족들이 고향 섬을
떠나는 장면의 모티브가 된 부탈루. 오페라에서는 피피살라 라는 이름의 섬이지요.
지금 남태평양의 많은 섬나라들이 사라지고 있습니다.
그리고 그 섬에는 우리가 무심코 버린 쓰레기들이 쌓이고 있습니다.

Tuvalu is a country home to 11,000 people and they could be the first to lose their entire nation because of climate change. The ocean, an integral part of their culture, is turning against them and rising 1.5 times faster there than the rest of the planet. 24-year-old Grace Malie has been volunteering as a Rising Nations Initiative youth delegate for Tuvalu and she’s been travelling around the world - and is currently at the COP28 in Dubai - to raise awareness so she can secure a future for her country. #LosingParadise
